Portrait of an Ainu Couple
Japan
19th century
A Kyoto or Osaka surimono depicting an Ainu couple. The Ainu are the native inhabitants of Hokkaido in Northern Japan. During the Edo period, people had a special interest in foreigners who they saw as 'exotic', which is likely the reason why this work was commissioned.
