Japan (Kyoto)
19th century

Kaishi (pocket paper) is an all-purpose paper, equivalent to a tissue or napkin, that has been used throughout Japanese history for writing, personal hygiene, and during traditional tea ceremonies. It is commonly depicted in ukiyo-e (floating world pictures), often held by a courtesan or geisha alongside other accessories. This kaishi is carried in a clasp with a scent pouch.
