Panel made from a Qing Official's Formal Court Robe (Chaofu)

China

19th century

An embroidered silk panel made reusing fragments of a black gauze Qing dynasty man's formal court robe (chaofu).

The central image shows a scene of a golden five-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl in a clouded sky with red bats over crashing waves. The scene is rendered on black gauze in florentine stitch and the dragon's body is formed using couched gold and silver metallic wrapped threads. The fragments on the panel's outside borders come from the same court robe and depict colourful waves and mountains captured in florentine stitch.

Panels reusing Qing period embroidered textiles, including formal uniforms like this one, were made after the fall of the dynasty in 1912 for the tourist and export markets.
