Three-tier Stacking Box for Face Powder

Japan
18th century

This Imari blue and white porcelain box is decorated with a lattice pattern, with small windows bordered by clouds revealing the Three Friends of Winter: pine, bamboo, and plum blossom. The lid is decorated with wish-granting jewels above rocks jutting out from waves. The lid has been repaired with the traditional Chinese mending technique of yaki-tsugi.

These tiered boxes were versatile in their use, with this small form being utilised for make-up. The bottom layer would have been used for water, the middle layer(s) for white gofun powder, and the top layer for mixing the powder and water into a paste, which was then applied to the face.
