Waitress Reading a Love Letter
Utagawa Toyokuni I
ca. 1803-25
A waitress reads a love letter under a branch of blooming plum blossoms. Painted in a spontaneous manner with simple washes of colour, this piece would have been rapidly executed on the spot at the request of a patron.
Toyokuni I's execution of textile patterns is evident through the waitress' striped kimono, tie-dyed towel hanging on her shoulder, chrysanthemum patterned apron, and shibori apron strings and collar.
