Kogai Hair Stick with Bats and Lingering Snow Design

Japan

19th century

A gold and silver maki-e lacquer ornamental hair stick (kogai-type), decorated with flowers, bats, snowflakes, streams, and spring blossoms.

The six-petalled roundels at the ends of the hair stick represent snow and are paired with depictions of streams and blooming spring flowers, such as cherry blossoms, which evoke the melting snow and floral rejuvenation that herald the arrival of spring. The addition of bats symbolises good fortune for the coming season.
