Cantonese Export Chess Piece of Red Queen

China
19th century

This Qing dynasty chess piece represents the 'queen' portrayed as an Empress in traditional Manchu attire. Such pieces were dyed red, usually with cochineal, and played against un-dyed white pieces made in Canton (Guangzhou) as part of elaborate chess sets aimed at American and European markets. A missing element from this piece is the intricate puzzle ball stand that would screw onto its base.
