Tankzaku with Ono Sadakurō, Cuckoo and Full Moon

Toyohara Kunichika
ca. 1866-1900

A calligraphic poem slip known as a tanzaku, depicting a scene from the fifth act of the kabuki play, The Treasury of Loyal Retainers (Chūshingura). A full moon has risen over the bandit Ono Sadakurō, who is stood under a tattered umbrella, snatching a coin purse that is hung around the neck of the elderly farmer, Yoichibei. Although the character of Yoichibei is not shown in the composition, the purse's taut cords that disappears off to the left of the image insinuates his presence.
