Key-block Poof for a Print from the Series, A Collection of Musical Beauties
Toyohara Kunichika
ca. 1878
First-state key-block proof (kyôgozuri-e) for a print from the series, A Collection of Musical Beauties. The series consists of at least seven prints picturing famous historical court ladies playing classical court music (gagaku 雅楽 ) on traditional instruments. Their beauty is compared to the flower pictured in the fan-shaped cartouche and their music to the song of the pictured bird.
The series's prints depict the present-day ensemble of instruments established in the Meiji period, consisting of three wind instruments (Hichiriki, Ryūteki and Shō) and three percussion instruments (Kakko, Shōko and Kaentaiko) being played, with the seventh print (this print) showing a court lady, perhaps a singer or dancer, with a hiogi 檜扇 fan.
