Watercolour Paint Box with Embossed Leather Panel

James Newman Co.
ca. 1820-30s

A James Newman mahogany wood artist's watercolour paint box stocked with thirty (30) watercolour cake blocks.

The inside of the box's lid has a maroon leather label embossed with the image of James Newman's manufactory building. The box has several divided storage compartments. A pen tray, a tray holding twelve (12) watercolour blocks and a ceramic pallet with three depressions and a slanted grinding area, cover three of these compartments.

On the bottom front of the box is a drawer that holds eighteen (18) watercolour blocks and a large slanted ceramic pallet mixing tray.

As the box has been used, pieces like the water bowl and the box's key are missing. Additionally, many of the current watercolour cake blocks were replaced by a previous owner and were produced by various colourmen, including James Newman, Winsor and Newton, and The Crown Stationary Office.
