Prostitutes Behind Harimise in Yokohama

Japan
ca. 1880-1910

The harimise was a fenced room at the front of some brothels, designed to offer patrons a view of the women and girls available for the evening. Lower-priced prostitutes were seated at the front, while the more exclusive and expensive ones sat further back, often accompanied by personal items such as a writing or smoking box.
