A portrait of Shōki, also known as Zhong Ku (Taoist deity in Chinese mythology), dressed in Chinese military attire, holding an oni (supernatural creature).
Talismanic images of Shōki, the demon queller, were displayed to ward off misfortune and diseases believed to have been caused by evil spirits and demons.
