Flowers: Snow, Moon, and Flowers of Eastern Genji
Utagawa Kunisada
1854
Originating from a poem by Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi, setsugetsuka (Snow, Moon and Flowers) became a popular theme in Japanese art during the late Edo period. This poetic expression celebrates the natural beauty of the seasons: snow symbolises winter, the moon represents autumn, and flowers evoke springtime.
This triptych is paired with another triptych which extends the view above to a balcony scene.
