Chinese White Paint Water Colour Paint Bottle

Winsor & Newton
ca. 1834

A bottle of Chinese white (zinc oxide) watercolour produced by the company Winsor and Newton, Limited. The bottle is clear with a square base with fluted corners and has raised moulded decoration of Winsor and Newton's griffin logo on one side and the word 'LONDON' on the back.

Winsor and Newton introduced the opaque white zinc oxide pigment in 1834, which was sold under the name of 'Chinese White', after the popular Chinese porcelain imported at the time. This pigment was a less toxic and more stable replacement for lead white.
