Silver Dirham of Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba Hisham II

Spain

ca. 976-1009

A silver dirham coin issued by the third Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba, Hisham II (reign 976-1009 & 1010-1013 CE) during his first reign (976-1009 CE). The obverse shows a central field bearing the Muslim declaration of faith, "No god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God," encircled by text now illegible due to the coin's margins being clipped. On the coin's reverse is a circle containing a fleur de lis, followed by al-Hakam II's titles. Encircling this central field is a band of text which, similar to the coin's obverse, is now illegible.

The Emirate of Cordoba, later self-proclaimed as the Caliphate of Cordoba in 929 by Hisham II's grandfather Abd al-Rahman III, was an Arab Islamic state that ruled from 756 to 1031 by a branch of the Umayyad Dynasty. It consisted of most of the Iberian Peninsula, known as al-Andalus.
