Silver Dirham of Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba Abd al-Rahman III

Spain

ca. 929-961

A silver dirham coin issued by the first Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba, Abd al-Rahman III (r. 929-961). The obverse shows a central field within three circles bearing the Muslim declaration of faith, "No god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God," followed by the name Qasim, encircled by a partially cut band of text. On the coin's reverse is a central field containing Abd al-Rahman III's titles, surrounded by a circular band of text which, similarly to the coin's obverse, is now partially cut.

The Emirate of Cordoba, later self-proclaimed as the Caliphate of Cordoba in 929 by Abd al-Rahman III, was an Arab Islamic state that ruled from 756 to 1031 by a branch of the Umayyad Dynasty. It consisted of most of the Iberian Peninsula, known as al-Andalus.
