Bronze Fals Coin of Mamluk Sultan Hasan with Mosque Lamp

Mamluk Syria

ca. 1354-1361

Bronze fals coin struck in Syria by Mamluk Sultan Al-Nasir Hasan (reign 1347-1351, 1354-1361 CE) during his second reign (1354-1361 CE). The coin depicts a mosque oil lamp hanging from a columned arch, likely a mihrab (the prayer niche of a mosque) on its obverse.

This imagery may originate from the Islamic theologian Al-Ghazali's (1058–1111 CE) Sufi commentary, The Niche of Lights, which interprets the Verse of Light from the Quran.
