Basilisk Supporting the Arms of the City of Basel

A printer’s mark of the Basel firm of Johannes Amerbach, Johannes Froben, and Johannes Petri, depicting a basilisk holding the heraldic coat of arms of the city of Basel. The design is attributed to the anonymous artisan known as Master DS, identified by the initials on his work. Such marks were commonly included by printers in the books they produced.
