Preparatory Drawing of Nakamura Nakazo I in the Role of an Outcast
Katsukawa Shunko I
ca. 1775–1785
An ink drawing of the Kabuki actor Nakamura Nakazo I (1736–1790) in the role of an outcast, featuring detailed notations across the body of the figure for the carver and printer.
This drawing relates directly to an untitled woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunkō I, published around 1775–1785.
Unlike the final design drawing (hanshita), which was destroyed during block carving, this looser sketch was made by Shunko I to guide the print production team in achieving his desired colours and printing effects.
Shunkō I is believed to have been the earliest student of the artist Katsukawa Shunshō (1752–1793). Like his teacher, Shunkō specialised in actor prints. After suffering a stroke that left him unable to use his right arm, he stopped designing prints but continued to paint.
