Angami Naga Shell Beads
Angami Naga, India
19th century
A collection of three large barrel-shaped beads carved from the cores of chank shell by the Anagami Naga people of southern Nagaland in North-Eastern India.
Such beads were made from imported chank shells (Turbinella pyrum) sourced from the Indian Ocean, typically the Bay of Bengal. They served as markers of wealth and status in the community and would have been strung into necklaces, handed down as heirlooms within families.
