Firefly Viewing
Utagawa Kunihisa II
ca. 1850-60s
On a warm summer evening, a woman has just washed her hair, which hangs loose over her orange cape patterned with clouds. In her left hand she holds a fan (uchiwa) decorated with chrysanthemums, a motif that hints at the approach of the cooling autumn. She gazes upward toward the moon as it peeks through clouds, where three fireflies drift across the night sky.
The pattern of her black-and-white plaid kimono was a popular one worn by both men and women in the late Edo period.
