Album of Erotic (Shunga) Preparatory Drawings for The Twelve Months of the Year

Utagawa School
ca. 1840-1870

An album of twelve erotic preparatory drawings, intended for a painting album or handscroll, pasted into a later accordion-style book with papier-mâché covers wrapped in chintz textile.

Each of the twelve scenes corresponds to a month of the year, and many incorporate seasonal motifs, celebrations and customs.

Seven can be pinpointed to specific locations, with four centring around the Kyoto area, one in Settsu province near Osaka, one in Izumo province and one at the Yoshiwara pleasure district of Edo. The remainder depict geographically ambiguous settings, both domestic and outdoor.

It is possible that whoever assembled the album, likely in the 20th century, mixed the shunga drawings from different sets to form it, as some scenes, such as Drawing of the Fifth Month (Diver and Octopus) or Drawing of the Twelfth Month (Couple Under a Kotatsu), lack the seasonal themes or customs one would expect for their respective months. Each drawing is annotated with instructions indicating the colours intended for the final painting, offering insight into the artist’s design process and planned palette.
