Preparatory Drawing of Kabuki Scene
Japan
ca. 1850-1900
A preparatory drawing for a multi-colour single-sheet print or book illustration depicting a scene from a kabuki play, showing three figures in dramatic poses. At the centre is a female character captured mid-movement, performing a shirabyōshi dance, flinging one sleeve outward and wearing a tall eboshi court hat. She is flanked by two figures. To the left, a warrior in a flat court hat with a ponytail holds a bow and arrow at the ready. To the right, a woman, youth, or man in disguise is dressed in a long-sleeved kimono with a veil and long hair, raising a mirror in one hand while grasping a sword hilt with the other.
The composition and poses recall imagery from kabuki scenes associated with the moment of confrontation and the revealing of a supernatural shapeshifter's true form, creatures such as bakeneko or kitsune.
Without the final printed work or any inscriptions, however, identifying the actors, the play, and even the artist remains difficult. Whether this design was ever published is unknown.
