Preparatory Drawing for Two Scenes from A True-Life Devoted Genji Vol. 3
Utagawa Kunisada
1851
A preparatory drawing for two erotic scenes from the shunga book A True-Life Devoted Genji (Shōutsushi Aioi Genji, 正冩相生源氏), Vol. 3, depicting Ashikaga Mitsuuji, the protagonist of the book series Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji (A Country Genji by a Fake Murasaki) and Sono Yukari Hina no Omokage (Reflections on his Relation to the Countryside), engaging in two separate sexual acts with different women. One scene shows Mitsuuji on his knees, grappling with a standing woman's pelvis and pleasuring her with his hand. Based on the woman's shaved eyebrows and her ponytail formed in a loop, she is likely a married lady in the service of a lord's household. The other scene shows a young woman with elaborate hair accessories lying on top of Mitsuuji, embracing him on the floor as he lifts part of her obi belt.
The drawing bears minimal light red, blue, black and green colour washes, along with notations for the carver and printers specifying the colours and patterns the artist desired for the final print.
A True-Life Devoted Genji, alongside the shunga books Kachoyojo Azuma Genji and Enshigojuyojo, form the pinnacle of the multicoloured print medium and are collectively referred to as Kunisada's "Three Genji". The three-volume A True-Life Devoted Genji specifically is said to have been a private commission by Yoshinaga Matsudaira (1828-1890), the daimyo lord of the Fukui Domain, intended as a luxurious gift to his associates. While no definitive proof exists for this claim, the high quality of craftsmanship and lavish materials, including a paulownia wood presentation box, attest to a considerable monetary investment in their production.
